What is meant by ”smokeless” powder?

Smokeless powder is a type of propellant used to expel the bullet from a firearm’s barrel. The term refers to the fact that this type of powder produces minimal smoke upon ignition compared to the older black powder used in early firearms.

Unlike black powder, which primarily consists of sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate, smokeless powder is composed of nitrocellulose or a combination of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin.
